Going Blonde: New Hair Colour & New Look styled by Carola Staudinger

After wearing more or less the same hairstyle for the last two years I really felt it was about time for a real change. For the first time ever, I wanted to get a completely new haircolor. I’ve been playing with the thought of going blonde since my time in Australia but never quite had the guts to go through with it. However, once I got back to Austria this thought became more concrete and through my missus I found out about the viennese hairstylist Carola Staudinger. Carola has an excellent reputation in Vienna when it comes to all forms of dyeing hair and had already done a great job with my girlfriend’s hair. After discussing what I was going for and getting some expert advice on how we would proceed I was finally convinced that this was actually going to happen. My first session involved two rounds of bleaching and took about 3 hours. At the end my hair was already quite blonde but still shimmered a bit yellowish, probably because of its slight tinge of red which makes it harder to achieve a crisp white blonde look. Since my scalp was already a little irritated Carola and I decided to call it a day and continue a couple of days later. In my second session Carola applied one more round of bleaching which took about one and a half hours and at the end my hairstyle transformation was finally completed. When I first saw the result I was completely blown off my feet. It was exactly the color I was aiming for: a very light and whitish blonde. Although it felt a little bit like seeing a completely different person in the mirror, I immediately felt great with the new look. I think this hairstyle looks even better with a little bit of a dark hairline, which started to show about one week after my last dying session. Bottom line, I’m super satisfied with going blonde although it took quite some time and effort. I love my new look as it is a true eye-catcher and adds some more edge to my style. On top of that, sometimes it’s just refreshing to get a radical change.

Based on my personal experience, I’ve put together five useful tipps you might want to consider when thinking about getting a new haircolor:

1. Be prepared. Don’t go to the hairdresser without having a concrete imagination of what you want to do or get. Good hairdressers will consult you but for that they need some information on what you have in mind. If you’re not too comfortable with verbally explaining what you want to get, use google to find some images of hairstyles that look like the one you aim for. Don’t be shy to show these to the hairdresser, they will usually know what to do. If you’re not sure whether a certain haircolor fits your skintone, use photoshop or apps like facetune to color your hair on a picture of yourself. It doesn’t have to be perfectly edited, but it will certainly give you a basic impression of how you could look like.

2. Be bold. Once you have chosen a colour or tone, don’t make compromises. Just before you go through with it you might tend to change your plans or get cold feet. However, if you decide to do it, go for the real thing. Compromises won’t make you happy in the long run and usually don’t have the same effect.

3. Be patient. Depending on the colour of your hair and the colour you are going for the dying process can take a while. Bring something to read or a laptop/tablet so you can get some work done in the meanwhile. Being patient usually pays off. The closer you stick to the time your hairdying expert recommends for applying the coloration, the more satisfying the result will be. In some cases your skin might react to the coloration product and irritations may occur. If your scalp starts to hurt or burn, don’t torture yourself too much. Call it a day, give your skin some time to recover and then finalize the process at another appointment.

4. Be careful. There’s a simple rule, special hair needs special care. Talk to your hairsylist or inform yourself about products you need to keep your hair healthy and good looking. Especially blonde/bleached hair is very demanding. Before I got my hair dyed I simply used a natural standard shampoo and nothing else. Now I use a natural shampoo especially designed for blonde hair, every now and then I use a silver shampoo to maintain the crisp white-blonde shimmer and avoid a yellow tinge, and I use a conditioner to protect my hair from drying out or unneccessary spliss. Basically you just need to adapt your daily morning routine to the new hair.

5. Be confident. When getting a completely new haircolor you can expect people to react to it. Almost certainly opinions about the new look will vary. But the most important thing is how you feel about it and how you present it. Try out different ways to style your hair in front of the mirror and get used to the new look. However, most importantly be confident about it and don’t let other people’s opinions spark any doubts. The more confidence you have in rocking your new hairstyle the cooler it will look.

Mission Blond: Neue Haarfarbe & neuer Look styled by Carola Staudinger
