Audi R8 Gerlospass Tour – A Day with the new R8 Coupé
Last weekend I had the pleasure to take part in the Audi R8 Tour at Gerlospass, where I got to spend half a day behind the wheel of the new Audi R8 Coupé, the winner of the 2016 World Performance Car Award.
Now, in case you’re not too familiar with sports-cars, let me tell you a thing or two about the new Audi R8 Coupé: The R8 – as the king of the Audi family – is certainly Audi’s most powerful model. A 5.2 liter 610 V-10 plus engine enables the R8 to a maximum speed of 330 km/h and makes this beast go from 0 to 100 km/h within only 3,2 seconds. As a standard feature the new R8 Coupé comes with Quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S-Tronic dual clutch automatic. The dynamic and lusciously sporty design of the R8 pays tribute to its undeniable race-car genes and makes the R8 a perfect alternative to Italian Racecars. And despite all all that power under its hood the R8’s road holding is simply astonishing.
However, this kind of quality and power has its price. So unless you don’t have a spare quarter million bucks on your bank account, you usually won’t find a car dealer who lets you take a test drie in a R8. Luckily, Audi took it upon themselves to find a way to still offer the unique driving experience of an R8 to its fans. As part of the annual R8 tours, taking place at several scenic locations across Austria, participants get the opportunity to casually take an Audi R8 for a spin.
First Impressions – A Beauty & A Beast
The R8 Tour I participated in, was hosted at Gerlospass, a mountain pass connecting the Austrian regions Salzburg & Tyrol, packed with epic views and fun-to-drive serpentines all along the way. After a short briefing in the morning, I could barely hold back my excitement of what was about to come. Quite frankly, I was also a little bit nervous, since I had never driven a car remotely as powerful as the R8.
We started our Tour Kitzbühel (Tyrol). I used the first couple of kilometers on the road to familiarize with the car. Our instructor told us to switch the driving mode to “dynamic” to get a more sporty driving experience and engine sound. Additionally, the motor sound button makes the engine blare even louder (click HERE to hear for yourself). Driving a car looking and sounding as sharp as the Audi R8 through provincial villages, it came as no surprise people along the way stopped and stared as if they had seen a miracle. I can’t deny I enjoyed this feeling at least a little bit. Already after this first few kilometers I knew the Audi R8 is both a beauty and a beast. Seriously guys, what a car!
The Ultimate Driving Experience & The Perfect Gift
Once we reached the mountain pass, I already felt quite comfortable driving. Thus, on the way up, I had a blast testing a bit of my R8’s acceleration, power and other driving features. The acceleration literally pushed me back into my seat but at the same time even in the sharpest curves the R8 sticked to the road like glue. Also, with the engine right behind me I didn’t even want to turn on the radio because I couldn’t get enough off the roaring sound. It’s hard to put into words but that feeling in the cockpit of this luxury rocket was something really special that I won’t forget anytime soon. Racing along the serpentines of the mountain roads at Gerlospass, only stopping to enjoy the views at selected vantage points every now and then, really was the ultimate driving experience, a day in paradise for all automobile enthusiasts.
As such the R8 Tour is the perfect gift for car-affine men and women of all ages. So if you’re desperately looking for an awesome gift idea next time, keep this in mind as the R8 Tour absolutely guarantees a lot of fun, excitement and a truly memorable experience.
