The new Audi A5 & S5 – I Tested Audi’s new Coupés on the Streets of Northern Portugal
Two weeks ago the new Audi A5 & S5 coupés were released. Already in advance I had taken both of these cars for a spin on the streets of Northern Portugal to get a first impression of Audi’s highly anticipated new Coupés.
Modernized design with more edge: The right combination of sporty coolness and elegance
The new design comes along more dynamic and athlethic and particularily the renewed front is a true eyecatcher. Through a broader and lower grill and an elongated bonnet showing a hint of a motordome the car has been given a new, sharper face. Sweeping sides defined by clear lines and broad fenders, a stretched wheelbase with short overhangs and a beefy rear underline the muscular and sporty appearance of the still majestically elegant coupé.
In my opinion the design of the new A5/S5 does not completely reinvent the car, which I think is absolutely great, since already the predecessor looked fantastic. However, it still takes the A5/S5 series to a new, even more dynamic and stylish level, making these cars the ultimate lifestyle cruiser and a true stunner on the street, which we also experienced ourselves. Driving an A5 through cities and villages in northern Portugal, people were literally turning their heads after our car as if we were some kind of celebrities. I have to admit, not the worst feeling in the world :).
The ultimate cockpit experience
Also the interior oft he A5/S5 coupé comes along strong as usual. Finest workmanship, high quality materials and a modern design make this cockpit experience a pure joy for all automobile enthusiasts. Of course, typical for Audi, the car does not spare with technical features.
A 12,3 inch LCD screen provides all information from navigation system over telephone & assistance systems to the integrated Audi connect and music services. An integrated Sim-card allows you to use the car as a Wi-Fi hotspot, which is a real convenience boost particularily for people like me who need internet connection for their job almost everywhere they go.
Another highly useful feature is the cars pre-sense system through which it can automatically identify potentially dangerous situations and obstacles, and warns the driver about them. If the driver doesn’t react, as an ultimo ratio the car itself can initiate the break.
Power and brilliant roadhoalding guarantee a lot of fun driving
Out on the country roads and serpentines of northern Portugal I was also able to get a real impression of the driving experience in the new A5 and test a bit of its power. Cruising along the narrow, often curvey roads I was particularily impressed with the incredible roadhoalding of the car, which gives you the impression it literally sticks to the road like glue, even if you take a curve a little sportier for once.
Another highlight was the cars’ accelaration. While I was already stunned by the power oft he 190hp 2.0 TFSI motor of the A5 Coupé, the Turbo V6 motor of the S5, which I finally got to drive for a couple of hours in the evening completely blow me off my feet. In general cruising through the north portuguese sunset behind the wheel of this dream-car feels like paradise for all car enthusiasts. It came as no surprise pedestrians along the beach promenade of Aveiro looked a bit as if their eyes were falling out and little kids battled themselves at who could take better snapchat videos of the car. All in all a truely sensational driving experience.
Kings of their class
After my day with the A5 and the evening with the S5 my resumee is nothing but positive. The renewed design, in my opinion, very likely makes the A5/S5 series to the most beautiful and stylish Coupés in their class.
