A Day at the Summerville Festival in Wiesen
Last weekend the missus and I visited Summerville Festival in Wiesen with Jack Daniel’s. For me it was a return to a place I have some awesome memories of back from my youth days. But also from a musical side, the line-up with Damien Rice, Peter Doherty, Ben Caplan and Olympique to name some of the highlights looked quite promising.
Just as we arrived at the festival campus around three in the afternoon the sun broke through the clouds and spoilt us with perfect festival weather. Thus we decided to relax a bit at the Jack Daniels Acoustic Stage & Chillout Area which was set up in the camping area of the festival. Listening to a nice local singer songwriter we got ourselves into the right festival mood with some delicious sweet potato chips and a sensational hot dog from the Jack Daniel’s Foodtruck as well as some refreshing drinks from the Jack Daniel’s Bar.
Pete Doherty disappoints once again, Ben Caplan jumps in
With our stomaches well fed we then made our way to the main stage, where we listened to Ben Caplan heating up the crowd with his unique uptempo country/folk songs. Our first highlight of the evening however took us back to the Acoustic Stage where, just as the sun started to set, the Austrian Band Olympique played a fantastic acoustic set which really reminded me a bit of the grand Kings of Leon. For the missus and me the perfect time to get a little romantic.
Then, towards the end of the gig the missus already got a little excited, since Peter Doherty was up next at the main stage. On our way there we heard people talking about how Pete Doherty by adding an “r” to his artist name has shown he has finally grown and sobered up and might actually play his show that night. Just minutes after we had taken our seats at the VIP area we saw these hopes of the Peter Doherty fans in the crowd shattered to pieces once more. Apparently Mr. Doherty “was not feeling well” and thus couldn’t play his show. Although personally I really didn’t care, I felt kind of bad for the people who had come just to see this guy and got let down once again. Luckily Ben Caplan jumped in once again to safe everyone’s night.
The Musical Highlight of the Evening: Damien Rice’s Performance Sparks Enthusiasm
My musical highlight however was Damien Rice who was the final act of the night. Playing a show just by himself he managed to capture everyone’s imagination including mine. The missus and I felt really touched by the highly emotional and melancholic songs this guy sang out into the night and it Damien Rice really showed that he’s one of the best songwriters of his time.
With this memorable finish, a great day at the festival finally came to an end and after Damien Rice’s show really no one wasted a thought on Doherty’s faux pas earlier on anymore. After all the Summerville Festival is certainly a lot more civilized and relaxed than the usual Rock Festivals I used to hang out at when I was younger. I particularly enjoyed the Jack Daniel’s Acoustic Stage and Chillout Area since it was the perfect place to enjoy the lovely weather in a laid-back festival atmosphere. Musically I will definitely keep in mind Damien Rice’s performance.
My Festival Outfit – Light Colors & 90’s Summer Vibes
Of course when going to a festival you also want to make sure rock up with the right style. I decided to pair bright seasonal colors to get in some summer vibes. The light blue ripped jeans match perfectly with the fresh pink sweater with a colorful 90’s print. Again aiming for a slightly old-school influenced style, I sported a pair of hi-top Vans, a pair of white tennis socks and a cool cap to keep a cool head when hanging out in the sun all day.
